The Adoption Process
Applications can often be processed within day if your references are easy to reach.
SRF’s goal is to make a great match for you and the horse so you can both share a lifetime of enjoyment together.
Submit:
- An application and Adoption/Caregiver Contract, available below, by fax, mail, or email.
- Include a $25 non-refundable application fee.
- Photos are required for the process.
Approval:
- Adopters must be over 18 years old or parent/guardian who will be responsible.
- Adopters must have sufficient horse care knowledge to adopt.
- Decisions are based on the applicant's horse knowledge, honesty, safety of the facility, references (non relatives), and photographs.
- Once approved, we will begin profiling a list of horses we think will suit your desire.
Terms:
- If you plan to board your horse a lien release must be signed by the boarding facility. It can be accessed below, faxed or mailed to you.
- Shipping is the adopter's responsibility.
- SRF asks for an adoption donation which varies on the horse. Generally this is between $350-$750.
- An adoption donation is not expected for "Pasture Mates" or “Companion” horses.
- Part of the agreement is your willingness to comply with having your veterinarian complete the Veterinarian Follow -up Form which is mailed to you semi-annually at the time of spring and fall innoculations. Veterinarians do not charge extra to complete this form. This information helps us to assure each adopted horse is in a safe home.
- Horses adopted from SRF can never be bred, used for embryo transfer, raced, sold, used for commercial purposes, or given away. We are looking for lifetime homes. If for some unforeseen reason an adopter can no longer provide good care for the horse, the horse must be returned to SRF and SRF only. If the adopter knows of an interested new adopter, the horse may NOT be transferred without SRF approval and the new potential adopter must be screened by SRF and a new caregiver contract must be completed prior to movement.
- SRF must be notified before a horse moves to a new facility, within ten days of serious injury or illness, and/or in the event of a horse's death/euthanasia.
SRF is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization founded in 1989. Donations are tax-deductible and the source of funds for operation.
We presently have more than 174 horses looking for a good home. 101 of these are pasture mates - companion only horses that cannot be ridden due to age or physical limitations. They would also love a home with you or sponsorship to pay the cost of their upkeep! There are 142 horses currently on the waiting list to come into the program. Each adoption helps us take in another horse in need.
