Dear
Horse Enthusiast,
Thank you for inquiring about adopting a
Standardbred. If you are unfamiliar
with this breed, you will be pleased to discover the Standardbred has earned a
reputation for being a sturdy, calm, versatile horse that is quick and willing
to learn, with wonderful stable manners and patience.
Many horses retire due
to lack of speed or have sustained injuries during racing; however, these
injuries do not affect their usefulness as pleasure horses. We have many horses
that are only comfortable in pasture, and are suitable as companions. We
determine their level of physical comfort and usefulness by compiling
information from the racing trainer and veterinarian, so a mutually compatible
match can be made for you and the horse. All of our horses are stabled in foster
care homes, mostly on the East Coast. Transportation of your newly adopted
horse to your facility is your responsibility.
Nearly every
Standardbred has a natural trot, knows how to steer and stop, and drives right
off the racetrack. They are also used to being handled and shipped
extensively. Most Standardbreds can be
ridden within days of beginning under saddle training, and some of our horses
are being ridden at their foster care homes.
All Standardbreds are easily trainable to any discipline. If you plan to
do more than leisurely trail rides, be prepared to do some work to get the trot
and canter collected. Your persistence will be rewarding, as the breed is known
to be very cooperative and quick to learn.
If you are a novice rider we suggest working with a trainer that is
familiar with this gentle breed.
Please read, complete, and return the application
attached and the $25 non-refundable application donation via check, credit
card, or Pay Pal. Be sure to fill out every question on the application,
including attaching a description of your ideal horse. As soon as we receive
your application we will begin screening your references. Often, the screening process can be
completed in one day. SRF makes application decisions based on the applicant’s
horse knowledge, honesty, safety of facility, financial stability, and ability
to provide a lifetime home to an adopted horse. SRF application decisions are designed to keep the horse’s best
interest in mind, and all decisions are final.
When the screening is
completed, including receipt of the signed placement agreement and photos, we
will begin profiling potential horses to you. After that, all you need to do is
choose which horse is best for you! We do request an adoption donation based on the horse's level of use and your giving ability. The adoption donation is waived for
“Pasture mates” or companion horses.
The mission and goal
of the Foundation is to find these horses good, loving, lifetime homes. In our
sixteen years of experience there have been rare occasions when an adopted
horse was uncared for. It is for this reason, we require our detailed Placement
Contract to be signed and on file in the office before adopting a horse. We
also require bi-annual vet reports stating the horse is in satisfactory
condition. Our adopted horses can
never be bred, raced, sold, leased, given away, or commercially used. We are looking for a lifetime commitment
to our horses, however, if an adopter can no longer provide good care for the
adopted horse(s), the horse(s) must be returned to the SRF. This assures that the horses will always be
well taken care of. With over 2,000 adoptions to-date, this helps the
Foundation to intervene in the best interest of the horse, if necessary.
We look forward to finding you a great match!
Cordially,
Placement Coordinator
